Evidence Based Practice

WORDStim, Adult Clinical by Ayana Webb, M.A. CCC-SLP SKILLS AND TASKS

Word retrieval, grammar, cognition, memory Evidence Based Practice: A person’s cognitive ability impacts anomia treatment success (Dignam et.al., 2017). Dyadic communication skills can enhance longterm preparation and management of Aphasia (Elman, 1999). Repetition is significant in driving plasticity and the ability of a patient to rehabilitate (Kleim & Jones, 2008). Language therapy including practice and production of sentences help patients with Aphasia improve internal strategies that assist with fluency of speech (Lee et.al., 2015). Diminished communication access and participation affects an individual’s “emotional and social well-being and quality of life” (Fotiadou, Northcott, Chatzidaki & Hilari, 2014; Hilari, Needle, & Harrison, 2012; Northcott, Moss, Harrison, & Hilari, 2016). This game is very engaging. The game format took away the sometimes clinical feel you can get providing treatment for anomia. It helps people stay motivated for longer and achieve a greater number of targets than I’m able to get using picture or word cards alone. The data sheets are easy to use and provide a great layout to track progress.
